How Many Draft Picks Did the Seahawks Have Entering the 2023 NFL Draft?
The Seahawks pulled off what looks like one of the greatest heists in NFL history in 2022 when they sent Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos for a bevy of picks and players. Seattle already landed Denver’s first- and second-round selections in last year’s draft, and the Wilson deal kept on giving in 2023.
The Broncos struggled so mightily last season that they handed the fifth overall pick to Seattle this year.
Although the Seahawks re-signed Geno Smith following his Comeback Player of the Year campaign, that early choice allowed Seattle to at least consider drafting a quarterback at the top of Round 1, although they ended up taking CB Devon Witherspoon.
The Broncos gave their second-round pick to the Seahawks, which resulted in Seattle having four selections in the top 60.
General manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll did an excellent job in 2022 by securing long-term assets like Charles Cross, Kenneth Walker III, Abraham Lucas, and Tariq Woolen, making it an all-time class. Their 2023 draft capital gave them the ability to build another impressive haul.
Although Seattle didn’t get any compensatory picks, they did acquire an extra fifth-rounder by trading cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. Also, the Seahawks traded a conditional seventh to the Houston Texans for cornerback John Reid in 2021, but Reid didn’t play enough to meet the deal’s conditions.
Seattle’s latest class of players includes headliner Witherspoon, who is expected to mesh well with Woolen and Mike Jackson as a physical slot-boundary hybrid. However, the team’s success didn’t stop there.
In Round 1, they also added Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is the perfect complement to DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett as a threat.
On Day 2, the Seahawks acquired Auburn’s Derick Hall, a fringe first-round talent, to bolster their pass rush. Additionally, UCLA’s Zach Charbonnet was brought on board to provide Walker with a powerful running back to work with. Charbonnet and Walker have each been banged up this offseason, but they secured a luxury by taking Charbonnet.
The Seahawks had an eventful Day 3 as they acquired six more picks to improve their team. They focused on strengthening both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, with three picks each.
For the offensive line, they acquired Anthony Bradford, who has potential for growth, and accomplished center Olusegun Oluwatimi. Additionally, they added Kenny McIntosh, a running back with strong pass-catching abilities.
On the defensive end, the team gained defensive tackle Cameron Young, defensive lineman Mike Morris, and defensive back Jerrick Reed II.
