Marquise Goodwin Waiver Wire Week 16: Old, Fast, and Startable

Tyler Lockett's broken finger elevates Marquise Goodwin to Seattle's WR2 role. Do fantasy managers need to add the speedy WR from the Week 16 waiver wire?

The first round of the fantasy football playoffs is just about over. Ideally, we don’t need to be starting players from the waiver wire, but until the season ends, we should always try to improve our teams. How much of a priority is Marquise Goodwin for fantasy managers to add off the waiver wire ahead of Week 16?

Marquise Goodwin Is Set To Be the Seahawks’ WR2

Week 15 was filled with excitement and intrigue. We saw the greatest comeback in NFL history and quite possibly the worst play in NFL history, all within about 24 hours. The NFL never disappoints.

But there was a game way back on Thursday. In that game, Tyler Lockett broke his finger. While there are conflicting reports on how much time he will actually miss, it’s going to be at least one game.

At this point in the fantasy season, our focus is on getting to the next week. And now, Goodwin has a chance to help fantasy managers reach their championship game.

The Seattle Seahawks rarely use more than three wide receivers in a game. Dareke Young and Penny Hart combined to play just five snaps. It’s all DK Metcalf, Lockett, and Goodwin, with the latter as a distant third.

If Lockett is out of the lineup, it stands to reason Goodwin will play a full complement of snaps as the WR2 opposite Metcalf. Goodwin played 60% of the snaps on Thursday, while Lockett and Metcalf played over 90%. If Goodwin gets a 90% snap share against the Chiefs this next week, he could be highly productive. I’m curious to see his receiving yardage projection on Underdog Fantasy.

Goodwin may be old, but he’s still fast and capable of getting open. He’s posted two games of over 20 PPR fantasy points on the season. That’s enough to warrant picking him up.

How Aggressively Should Fantasy Managers Pursue Goodwin Off the Waiver Wire?

This one is not as simple as whether you need Goodwin. If your opponent might need Goodwin, that’s reason in and of itself to go after him.

The Seahawks travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs this week. It’s a game in which they are likely to have to throw to keep up with Patrick Mahomes. Geno Smith needs someone to throw to beyond Metcalf, and Goodwin has a real shot at 8+ targets.

If you need a WR3, be aggressive on Goodwin. There is unlikely to be anyone better on your waiver wire at this point in the season. If your opponent is slated to start a very suspect WR3 or final Flex, block that team from doing so, if you can.

At this point in the season, FAAB recommendations are largely meaningless. Most teams have very little left, so it’s really a matter of how much do you need a guy. There’s only one week remaining after this one. You’re not saving your FAAB for anything. If Goodwin is the best player available, which he likely is, do whatever it takes. There’s no point in saving your budget if there’s a player you need.

If you play in a league that still uses the continual rolling list waiver priority system, use your highest priority if you need to.
