What Can We Expect From the Prime-Time NFL Officiating Crews in Week 13?

The two crews taking charge of the prime-time games are in the top half in most penalties per game this season. Carl Cheffers’ crew has the second-most penalties and the fourth-most flags. Meanwhile, Clay Martin’s crew is the seventh-highest in terms of penalties and the fifth-highest in terms of flags thrown.

Cheffers’ crew is extremely balanced with their home/road split — 6.64 penalties per game on the home team and 6.91 per game on the road team. Cheffers’ crew is tied for the most offensive pass interference (OPI) penalties this year with 0.55 per game. All six of those OPI penalties have been on the road team.

The other main penalties they are top three in: false start and unnecessary roughness penalties. Intriguingly, both of those penalties they have called more on the home team than on the road team. However, regarding defensive pass interference and defensive holding, Cheffers’ crew has 16 penalties combined on road teams (compared to just four on home teams).

Looking at Monday Night Football and Martin’s crew, there’s a huge home/road split, with five penalties per game on the home team and 7.36 per game on the road team. However, in the last three weeks, they have averaged fewer penalties per game on road teams (four) than home teams (five).

There is an intriguing home/road split on some penalties for Martin. When it comes to DPI, they have a seven-to-three home/road split, but in terms of defensive holding, it is a two-to-six home/road split. The other penalties Martin’s crew has called on the road team more than the home team include illegal use of hands, unnecessary roughness, delay of game, and face mask.
