    Maryland Sports Betting Timeline

    2022: Ten online sportsbooks were approved and awarded licenses to go live in Maryland, and mobile betting eventually launched on November 23rd.

    2021: In April 2021, the Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates approved a legalized sports betting bill that would permit up to 60 online operators as well as 30 retail sportsbooks. Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the law one month later, passing it as an emergency, meaning it was effective immediately. Maryland’s online sports betting launch still wasn’t imminent, however, as regulators had to agree on their rules and regulations and approve each sportsbook applicant. Retail sportsbooks opened before the end of the year at the casinos.

    2020: Legalized sports betting in Maryland was approved by voters during the 2020 election.

    2018: On May 14, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act), officially ending the federal ban on sports betting in the United States.
