Neither team has managed to really hit their stride this season, and the pressure is on Kliff Kingsbury in his fourth season in charge of the Cardinals. Making fast starts to the season has been the hallmark of the past two years for Kingsbury’s team, with a 7-0 start in 2021 and 5-2 in 2020. However, that has not been the case this year, with Arizona sitting at 2-4 and on a two-game losing streak.

The efficiency of the passing game has been of particular concern. Arizona ranks 32nd in terms of net yards per pass attempt and just outside the bottom 10 in terms of passing touchdowns (20). While they lead the league in plays per drive, they sit in the bottom 10 when it comes to points per drive (1.66).

The Cardinals will hope the return of DeAndre Hopkins from his suspension will help boost the passing game. Unfortunately, the loss of Marquise Brown to a foot injury negates some of the positive impacts that will be felt by Hopkins’ return.

Meanwhile, their defense is just outside the bottom five when it comes to points allowed per drive (2.28). When it comes to opposing scoring percentage, only the Detroit Lions have a worse percentage than the Cardinals (45 percent).

However, the Saints are not fairing much better in their first season under Dennis Allen. Promoted from defensive coordinator to replace Sean Payton, Allen’s team has particularly struggled when it comes to their defensive play this year.

They have the fourth-worst record in terms of total points allowed per game (26.3), and their scoring percentage allowed is only marginally better than the Cardinals (43.7).

The Saints’ offensive performances have been mixed. They rank 13th when it comes to points per game (23.5), with one of the best run games, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt. Their passing game ranks 12th in terms of efficiency, averaging a net 6.3 yards per play.

However, they have the third-worst turnover percentage in the league (16.7), which is severely limiting an offense that is top 10 in both third-down and red-zone conversion rates.
