With the 2022 preseason schedule officially underway, are there any NFL games being played today, Saturday, Aug. 20? As we continue Week 2 of the NFL preseason, what does today’s slate have in store?
NFL games on TV today | Saturday, Aug. 20
There are eight matchups being played on Saturday, four of which can be found on national television.
Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills
Time: 1 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
Two potential 2022 AFC powerhouses square off in this contest, both having rested a majority of star players in the teams’ respective first preseason outings. With quarterbacks Josh Allen and Russell Wilson and many of their top weapons having sat out last week, it would make sense to give them a chance to acclimate to a full-speed game before the September football begins. This is especially true for a Denver team that is attempting to contend in a loaded division with an overhauled coaching staff and a new starting quarterback under center.
Detroit Lions at Indianapolis Colts
Time: 1 p.m. ET
TV channel: Local FOX
Live Stream: fuboTV, NFL+
The stars of the 2022 season of HBO’s Hard Knocks are back for their second preseason game, as the Lions gear up to take on the Colts. While Detroit fell to the Atlanta Falcons in last week’s matchup, there were encouraging signs from some of the team’s more unheralded players, particularly former lacrosse player Tom Kennedy, who led the league in receiving yards for Week 1 of the preseason.
For the Colts, second-year quarterback Sam Ehlinger will look to build off of last week’s inspiring performance in his pursuit of a roster spot behind Matt Ryan and Nick Foles, and the team’s search for reliable receiving weapons to step up alongside Michael Pittman Jr. will continue after no Colts pass catcher recorded more than two receptions in last week’s game. Wideout Parris Campbell, tight end Mo Alie-Cox, and rookie receiver Alec Pierce are among the most likely to be relied upon in the team’s aerial attack this year, Pittman notwithstanding.
Washington Commanders at Kansas City Chiefs
Time: 4 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
Amid rampant discussion about his accuracy problems in training camp, Carson Wentz will attempt to quiet doubters in his second preseason outing, this time against the Chiefs. Whether rookie fifth-round pick Sam Howell can continue to impress, how the team distributes carries at the running back position, and whether first-round pick Jahan Dotson can make some noise after going without a reception last week will be among the other top storylines to watch.
For the Chiefs, while many eyes will be on rookie wide receiver Skyy Moore, who has shined in camp, fellow rookie George Karlaftis should be getting equal attention. The former Purdue pass rusher was borderline dominant against the Chicago Bears last week, and his impressive preseason play should have Chiefs fans chomping at the bit for more.
Las Vegas Raiders at Miami Dolphins
Time: 7 p.m. ET
TV channel: Local FOX/CBS
Live Stream: fuboTV, NFL+
Las Vegas’ running back rotation garnered quite a bit of discussion last week, as the team played Josh Jacobs well into the exhibition contest, something teams don’t often do with players cemented into a full-time role. Does this mean rookie Zamir White will take on more of a load out of the gate than originally expected? Or was it simply a matter of philosophy from head coach Josh McDaniels, as the latter insinuated after the game? How the team’s ball carriers are used this week should offer more insight.
Miami enters its second preseason week fresh off of first-time head coach Mike McDaniel’s inaugural NFL win (albeit in a preseason game), and while we shouldn’t expect too much more of a window into the coach’s offensive scheme, fans will be eager to see if rookie seventh-round draft pick Skyler Thompson can replicate his stirring performance from last week’s victory. Thompson is third on the quarterback depth chart and is unlikely to push Teddy Bridgewater for the backup spot behind Tua Tagovailoa, but he’s certainly well on his way to earning a roster spot with another team (or a practice squad spot in Miami, at a minimum).
Pittsburgh Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars
Time: 7 p.m. ET
TV channel: Local CBS/FOX
Live Stream: fuboTV, NFL+
Pittsburgh has a plethora of young talent on display this preseason, including the much-hyped rookie wideout George Pickens, who has been stunning training camp audiences day in and day out. First-round pick Kenny Pickett, who was superb in his NFL debut, will look to keep up the momentum as he slowly works his way towards the top of the quarterback depth chart.
Keep an eye out for 2022 first-overall pick Travon Walker. Aidan Hutchinson stole quite a few headlines following Detroit’s game last week, but Walker has flashed for the Jaguars, and it could be his turn to make some noise and represent the best defenders in this draft class.
San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings
Time: 7 p.m. ET
TV channel: Local CBS/FOX
Live Stream: fuboTV, NFL+
As per usual for the 2022 offseason, plenty of attention will be focused on 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, and deservedly so, as the second-year signal caller looks to take over for Jimmy Garoppolo. But Minnesota’s lead-up to the season has gone largely under the radar outside of the team’s hiring of new head coach Kevin O’Connell back in February, and there is plenty of purple and gold intrigue to watch out for. For example, how will the team’s rookie defensive back duo of Lewis Cine and Andrew Booth Jr. fit into defensive coordinator Ed Donatell’s secondary?
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Tennessee Titans
Time: 7 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
Tom Brady is nowhere to be found, at least for now, and while the team can’t ignore his absence forever, it has immediate concerns that it can turn its attention to in the meantime. How is second-year center Robert Hainsey acclimating to the starting center role? Will second-year edge rusher Joe Tryon continue to develop into a full-time contributor on defense? Brady’s departure will need to be addressed. But for now, Week 2 of the preseason and the Tennessee Titans provide something else to focus on.
As for the Titans, look out for whether wide receiver Treylon Burks can take a step forward from his seemingly underwhelming place on the depth chart. It’s been a rough offseason for Burks, but his talent is undeniable (as is the first-round draft capital invested into the rookie).
Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Chargers
Time: 10 p.m. ET
TV channel: NFL Network
Live Stream: Vidgo, fuboTV, NFL+
Our final game of the Saturday slate sees the Cowboys heading west to take on the Chargers, and there will be plenty of fantasy football intrigue in this one. Which Dallas pass catchers step up to help round out what is a largely unproven group behind CeeDee Lamb, tight end Dalton Schultz, and the injured Michael Gallup will certainly be a question on the minds of those with fantasy drafts coming up. Which Chargers running back manages to stake the strongest claim for what should be a valuable spot on the depth chart behind incumbent starter Austin Ekeler is another.
