Green Bay Packers veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is visiting the Kansas City Chiefs, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly. Valdes-Scantling is meeting with the Chiefs as they’re at an impasse with wide receiver Tyreek Hill and have granted him permission to seek a trade, per league sources.
Will the Packers try to hold onto Marquez Valdes-Scantling?
Valdes-Scantling has strong interest from the Packers and multiple NFL teams while he meets with the Chiefs, per sources.
The Packers obviously need help at wide receiver after trading Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams signed a five-year deal that averages $28.5 million annually with $67.5 million fully guaranteed to remain in Las Vegas long term. Because of Adams’ departure, the Packers are in flux at the position. Ideally, they would be able to retain free agent wide receiver Valdes-Scantling.
League sources indicated that the former fifth-round draft pick’s market is heating up, and he could leave Green Bay.
Valdes-Scantling has drawn interest from the Raiders, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, and San Francisco 49ers. The Jaguars were interested in Valdes-Scantling before signing Christian Kirk to a monster deal.
Kirk signed a four-year, $72 million ($18 million annually) contract with a maximum value of $84 million, per a league source. While Valdes-Scantling won’t be nearly as expensive, he’ll still do well in free agency as one of the top remaining options on the marketplace.
Valdes-Scantling has caught 123 career passes for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns. He caught 26 passes for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns in 11 games with seven starts last season. In 2020, he reeled in a career-high 6 touchdowns on 33 receptions for a career-high 690 yards and a 20.9 average per catch.
