Michael Gallup Re-Signs With Dallas Cowboys: What move means for free agent market

Michael Gallup is staying with the Dallas Cowboys after signing a new contract in the 2022 free agency period.

A premier wide receiver is off the 2022 free agency board. Dallas Cowboys wideout Michael Gallup is sticking around in Arlington after signing a new contract. The ascending playmaker has re-signed with the Cowboys for five years and $62.5 million, a league source confirmed to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson. According to Wilson, the deal includes $27 million in guaranteed money.

Michael Gallup re-signs with Dallas Cowboys

Gallup, a 2018 third-round pick, will return to the only NFL franchise he has played for. Gallup suffered a torn ACL in Week 17 of last season but will get to rehab in a familiar facility throughout the offseason. He will also get to return to an offense that he has been featured in for the past three years.

Gallup was expected to be one of the top free agent receivers on the market before re-signing with the Cowboys. While he is coming off major knee surgery, Gallup has improved in every season of his career and appears to be a legitimate top-flight weapon. Now, he will continue to team up with CeeDee Lamb to form the most electric receiver duo in the NFC East. He will also continue to catch passes for Pro Bowl QB Dak Prescott.

    Getting to know Gallup

The Cowboys selected the Colorado State alum with the 81st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The third-round pick immediately contributed as a rookie, catching 33 passes for 507 yards and 2 touchdowns. In 2019, Gallup improved on his impressive first season, collecting 66 catches for 1,107 yards and 6 touchdowns, which remain his career-high numbers.

The Cowboys selected Lamb in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, which pushed Gallup down to the No. 3 receiver spot, opposite the rookie and Amari Cooper. Gallup caught 94 passes for 1,288 yards and 7 touchdowns over the past two seasons. He missed eight games last year but still managed to catch 35 passes for 445 yards and 2 touchdowns.

At just 26, Gallup is entering his prime years, and the Cowboys are hoping that he and Lamb can continue to be top targets for Prescott for years to come.

Who else is left on the market?

Gallup was a top-20 free agent and the second-ranked wideout on the open market for Pro Football Network Lead NFL Analyst Dalton Miller.

With Gallup returning to Dallas, Odell Beckham Jr. of the Los Angeles Rams, Allen Robinson of the Chicago Bears, and Christian Kirk of the Arizona Cardinals remain at the top of the wide receiver list. Additionally, Beckham, Robinson, and Kirk are all expected to receive lucrative long-term term deals in free agency.
