The NFL head coaching search picture is coming into focus. Three teams have now hired coaches. Three have hired general managers. And with the Las Vegas Raiders meeting with Josh McDaniels this weekend, a fourth job could be filled at any time. Here’s the latest on today’s NFL news and rumors.
NFL News and Rumors Today
The Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants have their coaches — Matt Eberflus, Nathaniel Hackett, and Brian Daboll, respectively. We expect several more teams, most notably the Raiders and perhaps the Texans, to make their own hires in the coming days.

The latest: Eberflus is wasting no time in assembling a staff. Or at least attempting to assemble one. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that he’s offered Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy the offensive coordinator position.
As of Saturday morning, no official hire had been made. Meanwhile, interim Raiders coach Rich Bisaccia could ultimately land in Chicago as the Bears’ special teams coach.
Denver Broncos
Fired: Vic Fangio (HC)
Hired: Nathaniel Hackett (HC)
Scheduled/requested interviews:
- Eric Bieniemy
Chiefs offensive coordinator
Friday, Jan. 21 - Brian Callahan
Bengals offensive coordinator
Thursday, Jan. 20 - Jonathan Gannon

Wednesday, Jan. 19 - Luke Getsy

The latest: The Packers, aware that they could lose both Hackett and Getsy in the same offseason, have taken measures to protect against a defection by basically their entire offensive coaching staff. Hackett was said to have wanted to bring Green Bay run game coordinator Adam Stenavich with him to Denver, but that won’t be happening, per 9News.
Houston Texans
Fired: David Culley (and offensive coordinator Tim Kelly)
Scheduled/requested interviews:
- Brian Flores
Former Dolphins head coach
Friday, Jan. 14 - Jonathan Gannon

Rams offensive coordinator - Josh McCown
Former NFL QB
Thursday, Jan. 20 (first); Friday, Jan. 28 (second) - Hines Ward
Florida Atlantic special assistant to the head coach
Saturday, Jan. 15
The latest: Josh McCown could actually get the Houston Texans’ top job. In fact, if the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain is correct, he’s the frontrunner for it. McClain wrote that McCown, 42, who has never been a full-time coach at any level, is “the favorite and could be hired early next week.”
Jacksonville Jaguars
Fired: Urban Meyer (HC)
Scheduled/requested interviews:
- Darrell Bevell
Jaguars interim head coach
Tuesday, Jan. 11 - Todd Bowles
Buccaneers defensive coordinator
Friday, Jan. 3 (Jan. 7 has also been reported) - Jim Caldwell
Former Colts and Lions head coach
Tuesday, Jan. 4 - Matt Eberflus — Hired by the Bears
Colts defensive coordinator
Saturday, Jan. 15 (first); Thursday, Jan. 20 (second) - Nathaniel Hackett — Hired by the Broncos

Friday, Jan. 7 - Bill O’Brien
Alabama offensive coordinator
Thursday, Jan. 13 - Doug Pederson
Former Eagles head coach
Thursday, Dec. 30 - Vic Fangio
Former Broncos coach
Monday, Jan. 24
The latest: There’s a lot to unpack with this team. Leftwich was, then wasn’t, but could again be the Jaguars’ next coach. And the general manager who has been a big part of the Jaguars’ search — Trent Baalke — would likely be gone if Leftwich is the hire. Cardinals executive Adrian Wilson is said to be eyeing Baalke’s job, and would likely team up with Leftwich in Jacksonville.
Las Vegas Raiders
Resigned: Jon Gruden (HC)
Scheduled/requested HC interviews:
- Todd Bowles
Patriots inside linebackers coach
Tuesday, Jan. 25 - Jerod Mayo
Patriots LB coach

The latest: Saturday could be the day the Raiders hire their head coach and general manager. PFN Insider Aaron Wilson reported late Friday that McDaniels and Ziegler are likely the hires, and they’re a package deal. McDaniels is meeting with the Raiders this weekend, and unless things go sideways, the expectation is they hire him in the coming days.
UPDATE from PFN Insider Aaron Wilson: Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, after having dinner with Raiders on Friday night in Las Vegas, is meeting with team officials for the entire day for his interview with everything proceeding very well so far, per league sources.
Miami Dolphins
Fired: Brian Flores (HC)
Scheduled/requested interviews:
- Thomas Brown
Rams assistant head coach
Friday, Jan. 21 - Brian Daboll — Hired by the Giants
Bills offensive coordinator
Sunday, Jan. 16 - Leslie Frazier

Sunday, Jan. 16 - Vance Joseph

Cowboys offensive coordinator
Thursday, Jan. 20; second interview as early as Jan. 31 - Dan Quinn — Returning to Cowboys
Cowboys defensive coordinator
Thursday, Jan. 20
The latest: Since the Giants were the winners of the Brian Daboll sweepstakes, it’s fair to view the Dolphins as the losers. They wanted to interview him a second time next week. He apparently didn’t need to take that meeting before making a decision. Expect the search now to zero in on McDaniel, who could be available to hire as soon as Monday.
Minnesota Vikings
Fired: Mike Zimmer (HC), Rick Spielman (GM)

Eagles vice president of football operations
Monday, Jan. 17 - John Spytek
Buccaneers vice president of player personnel - Eliot Wolf
Patriots player personnel consultant
Thursday, Jan. 20
The latest: Ryans is the name to watch here, given his ties to Adofo-Mensah and the job he’s done in San Francisco this season in general, and the playoffs, in particular. But since he cannot be hired until the Niners are eliminated, the Vikings aren’t just sitting on their hands. They will meet with Graham on Saturday.
UPDATE: PFN has confirmed Pro Football Talk’s report that the Vikings are interviewing Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh has through back channels made it clear that he would be willing to leave Michigan for a return to the NFL. He was the coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014, going 44-19-1.
New Orleans Saints
Retired: Sean Payton (HC)
Scheduled/requested HC interviews:
- Dennis Allen
Saints defensive coordinator - Brian Flores
Former Dolphins head coach - Aaron Glenn
Lions defensive coordinator - Byron Leftwich
Buccaneers offensive coordinator
The latest: The Saints are in no hurry to make a hire, New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis said this week. And frankly, they can afford to take their time. Their coaching staff — including Allen, who’s widely seen as the frontrunner for the job — is under contract.
New York Giants
Fired/retired: Joe Judge (HC), Dave Gettleman (GM)
Hired: Brian Daboll (HC), Joe Schoen (GM)

Thursday, Jan. 13 - Joe Hortiz
Ravens director of player personnel
Saturday, Jan. 15 - Monti Ossenfort
Titans director of player personnel
Friday, Jan. 14 - Adam Peters
49ers assistant general manager
Monday, Jan. 17 (first); Thursday, Jan. 20 (second) - Ryan Poles
Chiefs executive director of player personnel
Thursday, Jan. 13 (first); Wednesday, Jan. 19 (second) - Joe Schoen — Hired
Bills assistant general manager
Wednesday, Jan. 12 (first); Tuesday, Jan. 18 (second) - Adrian Wilson
Cardinals vice president of pro personnel
Wednesday, Jan. 12
The latest: Daboll was probably going to be the hire once Schoen took the GM job. What isn’t as clear: how much of Daboll’s staff can he bring with him from Buffalo. ESPN reports that Bills quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey will either succeed Daboll in Buffalo or follow him to New York as the Giants’ offensive coordinator.
