Why isn’t Daniel Jones playing today vs. the Dolphins?

Due to a neck strain injury suffered in Week 12 against the Eagles, Giants QB Daniel Jones will not play today against the Dolphins.

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones suffered a neck strain injury in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles. As a result, he’s out this week against the Miami Dolphins, and veteran Mike Glennon will get the start.

Regardless of how you may feel about Jones as a starting NFL quarterback, no one can question his toughness. Jones suffered the neck strain last week on just the second offensive play for the Giants. Nevertheless, he finished the game and helped his team to victory over their division rivals — New York’s third win in the last five games.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported Jones’ injury this past Tuesday. While Jones was not immediately declared out for Sunday against the Dolphins, the Giants’ signing of QB Jake Fromm off of the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad was an early indication that he would indeed miss time.

Still, again alluding to Jones’ toughness, the three-year veteran QB did his best to give it a go this week after putting in limited practice sessions. However, as expected, Jones was ruled out on Friday for at least this week, giving Glennon the start.

You have to admire Jones’ attempt to play this week, but will he see the field at all again this season?

Is Jones out for the year?

As of now, the Giants are not acting as if Jones will be out for the rest of the season or planning to place him on the injured reserve. In fact, Jones will be traveling with the team to Miami and on the following trip to Tucson, Arizona, for remote practices ahead of New York’s Week 14 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Giants head coach Joe Judge calls Jones’ neck strain a “gray area” in terms of when he could be available. As of now, the Giants are calling Jones week-to-week, but skeptics may be under the impression that his placement on the IR is inevitable. From the Giants’ perspective, it makes sense not to immediately place Jones on IR if there is a reasonable way to manage his injury.

Believe it or not, the Giants are actually in the mix for a postseason berth. As it stands, New York sits just one game behind their rivals, the Washington Football Team, for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoff picture — who they will host in the regular-season finale. While several teams sit between them and Washington, the New Orleans Saints already did their part this week for the Giants by losing to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football.

We’ve seen this year more than any in recent memory that anything can happen in the NFL, and the Giants have been playing well as of late. While injuries are never a good time for any player, it couldn’t have come at a worse time for New York.

What can we expect from Mike Glennon?

Not much. Glennon last played in Week 5 for the Giants in relief of Jones. Against the Cowboys, he completed 16 of 25 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown but threw 2 interceptions.

While wins should not exactly define a QB, Glennon’s 6-21 career record as a starter is glaring. Last season with Jacksonville, he went 0-5 as a starter, throwing for just 1,072 yards total on 111-of-179 passing with 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Glennon does, however, hold a victory over the Dolphins. But that was back in 2013, and the current Dolphins defense is playing its best football of 2021. It could be a long day at the office for Glennon and the Giants’ offense on Sunday.
