Which officiating crew has thrown the most penalty flags in the first seven weeks?
With 16.5 flags per game, Scott Novak’s crew remains the one to have thrown the most flags per game over the course of the season. However, the numbers for Novak’s crew are bolstered with 47 flags thrown through the first two weeks, while their numbers have dropped in the past few weeks.
Including Novak, five NFL refs head up crews that have averaged 16 or more flags thrown per game through the first seven weeks. All five of those referees’ crews (Novak, Clark, Wrolstad, Hochuli, and Cheffers) have game assignments in Week 8.
On the other end of the scale, Bill Vinovich’s crew have thrown just 11.1 flags per game, the fewest in the league. Three other crews have thrown 13 flags or fewer per game (Corrente, Smith, Torbert). Vinovich’s crew are on a bye this week, but Corrente, Torbert, and Smith are all assigned to games.
