This should be an interesting matchup. Historically, the Cowboys have struggled against the Vikings. However, this season things are different. Dallas is currently fighting for the top spot in the NFC, and the Vikings will need to be content with a Wild Card spot with Green Bay a few games ahead of them in the division.
The problem Minnesota faces in this one is their inconsistent offense. Twice this year, they’ve been held to under 20 points, including a performance where they scored just 7 against the Browns. Yet, in three other games, they put up 30 or more. It’s tough to know which version of the Vikings and Kirk Cousins we will get in this one.
Meanwhile, Dallas has been consistently putting up points this year. They are currently first in the NFL in points scored per game (34.2) and yards per game (460.8). Dak Prescott has also been one of the most valuable QBs in the NFL, according to Pro Football Network’s Offensive Value Metric.
What has helped Dallas rediscover their offensive prowess has been the re-emergence of their rushing attack. After six games, Ezekiel Elliott has 521 rushing yards and Tony Pollard has 366. That puts them both on pace to have more than 1,000 rushing yards this season. That is an incredible feat, one that we have not seen since 2009 — Carolina’s Jonathan Stewart had 1,133 yards and DeAngelo Williams finished with 1,117.
Cowboys vs. Vikings prediction
The Cowboys are averaging 10 more points per game than the Vikings. Their defenses are playing somewhat at the same level, but the Cowboys have produced substantially more turnovers. Trevon Diggs is making a strong case for DPOY with 7 interceptions so far this season.
One key position to keep an eye on will be the Cowboys’ offensive line. Entering Week 8, Minnesota is tied for the NFL lead with 21 sacks — just 2 sacks shy of the Vikings’ total from 2020. Therefore, Dallas will need to protect Dak if they expect to win this one. If the Cowboys’ rush defense can also contain Dalvin Cook, I expect them to win this one easily.
The point total is high at 55.5, and you never know which Vikings team you are going to get. I would stay away from the total.
