The Browns open the week as 3.5-point favorites against their rival in Pittsburgh. This is relatively new territory, as Cleveland has been in the doghouse of the AFC North for years. It’s a different year, though, and the Browns have proven they can contend in what’s become a tough division top to bottom.
While neither the Steelers nor Browns are leading the division, there are three Wild Card spots available. At 4-3, Cleveland currently holds one of those three spots while the Steelers — who enter Week 8 with a 3-3 record — are on the outside looking in.
Baker Mayfield’s injury designation could determine outcome
For Browns fans, 2021 was supposed to be the year. On paper, the entire roster looked ready to compete for not only a playoff spot, but a deep postseason run. While that’s still within reach, quarterback Baker Mayfield’s health could be the deciding factor in where this team goes as we reach the midway point of the season.
A win against the Steelers on Sunday would be critical regardless if Mayfield or long-time journeyman Case Keenum is under center. Right now, the needle points to Keenum as Mayfield deals with shoulder dislocations and a labral tear that resulted in a fracture. Keenum picked up a crucial victory against Denver last Thursday night, but Mayfield gives the Browns the best chance to win on a week-to-week basis, especially against a team like Pittsburgh.
Steelers vs. Browns prediction
Mayfield’s injury isn’t the only thing that might hold Cleveland back. At running back, Kareem Hunt is on injured reserve. But Nick Chubb practiced on Monday, giving Browns fans and bettors hope that he’ll suit up on Sunday.
The Steelers could have the luxury of not facing Mayfield, Hunt, or wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who limped off the field late in last Thursday’s win. A heavy dose of Najee Harris is needed for Pittsburgh to stay out of last place in the division, and that might be enough coming off a bye week. With no Mayfield, expect a slugfest and a healthy amount of Chubb and Harris on Sunday.
Prediction: Browns 24, Steelers 23
