Which officiating crew has thrown the most penalty flags in the first five weeks?
Despite throwing just 13 flags in Week 5, it is Scott Novak’s crew who retains the dubious honor of having thrown the most flags per game. They are narrowly ahead of the crews of Shawn Hochuli and Land Clark. Among those three, only Hochuli will ref in Week 6 of the NFL season.
At the other end of the spectrum are Bill Vinovich, Shawn Smith, and Ron Torbert. Their crews are averaging 11.2, 12.4, and 12.6 flags per game, respectively. In Week 5, Vinovich’s crew threw just five penalty flags in the best part of five quarters of the Bengals and Packers overtime game.
With Smith assigned as the ref to Sunday Night Football in Week 6 of the NFL season, we will hopefully see a smooth game on NBC with a limited number of flags thrown.
