Washington Football Team vs. Atlanta Falcons prediction and odds | Week 4

    Odds from DraftKings sportsbook.

    • Spread: Washington -1.5
    • Moneyline: Washington -110, Falcons -110
    • Over/Under: 47.5 (Over -110, Under – 110)

Washington may be 1-2, but they are 0-3 against the spread (ATS). Additionally, they are 0-6 straight up in their last six contests against the Falcons. On the flip side, Atlanta has only won 2 of their last 9 home games. One of these trends will end on Sunday, and DraftKings is leaning one way.

The spread for this contest opened with the Falcons being -2.5 favorites. Yet, the line has swung in favor of Washington — rightfully so. Yes, WFT is coming off a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills. But that embarrassment should drive them to knock off the Falcons. Furthermore, Washington’s vaunted defense has struggled to open the season — facing Atlanta may be what the doctor ordered. With that said, I don’t expect a high-scoring affair. And with the under hitting in two of Atlanta’s three games, I anticipate it hitting again.

    Washington vs. Falcons prediction

If it were any other year, Matt Ryan would be the far better quarterback heading into a matchup with Taylor Heinicke. Well, it isn’t any other year — it is 2021. Ryan is averaging 1.9 yards less per attempt and has an average depth of target that is 2.9 yards shorter than Heinicke. Additionally, Ryan has thrown 3 interceptions and fumbled twice.

His offensive line hasn’t done him any favors, as he has been sacked 7 times through the first three weeks. However, due to his lack of escapability and pocket mobility, Ryan isn’t helping them, either. While I praised Heinicke earlier, his offense isn’t faring much better.

Washington is the least efficient unit on third down, converting just 9 of 34 attempts. On the flip side, Atlanta will make things easy through the air, allowing the fourth-highest passer rating in the NFL (117.9). On the other side of the ball, WFT is tied for the fewest sacks in the NFL (3). They will have every opportunity to reach Ryan.

Although the Falcons are at home on a short week for both sides, Washington’s defense should be too much for Atlanta. Calvin Ridley is the only receiver on the team with over 10 targets (29), and rookie TE Kyle Pitts has been vastly underutilized. Expect WFT to rebound after a tough loss and the Falcons to continue on the trajectory for a top-10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

    Prediction: Washington 24, Falcons 16
