The unfortunate reality of the return of the NFL is when players are allowed to go full speed — injuries are bound to happen. Now that fantasy football managers are updating their lineups for the coming week, several players have found themselves on the injury report, leaving their status for Week 3 in the air.
Update 09/26/21: Make sure to check out our most up-to-date fantasy football injury report for Week 3.
Fantasy Football Injury Report: QB update
Here is where we currently stand in terms of the fantasy football QB options dealing with an injury.
Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
Dolphins head coach Brian Flores confirmed on Wednesday [September 22] that Tua Tagovailoa will be out for Sunday’s game against the Raiders. The second-year quarterback is dealing with fractured ribs, per the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s David Furones. Veteran QB Jacoby Brissett will be the starting QB.
Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
Lamar Jackson was absent from practice on Thursday [September 23] with a non-COVID-related illness, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. However, there is no concern about him missing Week 3.
Andy Dalton, Chicago Bears
After sustaining a bone bruise in Week 2, Andy Dalton will miss Week 3, according to head coach Matt Nagy. Rookie QB and No. 11 overall pick Justin Fields will make his long-awaited debut as the starter. However, Nagy has stated that once healthy, Dalton will return as the team’s starter.
Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts
Carson Wentz (ankles) is not participating in Thursday’s practice, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports. Wentz is dealing with sprains in both ankles that he sustained in Week 2 when taken down by Aaron Donald. Jacob Eason will be the Colts starter should Wentz miss time.
Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
Ben Roethlisberger returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday after sitting out due to a left pectoral injury. It’s not expected to keep him out of Week 3 when the Steelers take on the Bengals.
Fantasy Football Injury Report: RB update
How is the injury bug affecting RB committees heading into Week 3?
Demetric Felton, Cleveland Browns
According to Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal, the Browns added Demetric Felton to the injury report on Thursday with a hip injury. He was a limited participant in practice. Felton is coming off the first productive game of his young career, recording 2 receptions for 51 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown.
D’Andre Swift, Detroit Lions
D’Andre Swift was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice (groin). Fantasy managers should not worry, however. Swift was listed with a groin injury in the previous two contests and played well in both.
Josh Jacobs, Las Vegas Raiders
According to Pro Football Network NFL Insider Adam Beasley, Josh Jacobs (ankle) did not participate in practice again on Thursday. Jacobs missed Week 2 due to ankle and toe injuries. On Monday [September 20], head coach Jon Gruden said that Jacobs is “very questionable” to face the Dolphins in Week 3.
Darrell Henderson, Los Angeles Rams
According to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN, Rams head coach Sean McVay says Darrell Henderson has a rib cartilage injury that he sustained last Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. McVay added, “they have hope and optimism with him and will be checking in again Friday.” Henderson was a non-participant on Wednesday.
Dalvin Cook, Minnesota Vikings
Halfway through the fourth quarter, Dalvin Cook received a handoff and was tackled from behind. He stayed down on the field for a short time and walked off gingerly while being escorted by trainers. Head coach Mike Zimmer said it was an “ankle sprain.” Cook was in attendance but did not participate in practice on Thursday, according to Eric Smith of the Vikings’ official site. He has been labeled as a DNP for both Wednesday and Thursday.
Damien Harris, New England Patriots
According to Alex Barth of 98.5 The Sports Hub, Damien Harris was a limited participant for the second-straight day on Thursday with a finger injury. There has not been any expressed concern about him missing time. Yet, it’s worth monitoring as Harris missed the start of the 2020 season after surgery to repair a broken finger.
Saquon Barkley, New York Giants
Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports Saquon Barkley (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday. Barkley’s been slowly working his way back from the ACL tear suffered last season. There is optimism that the longer break from their Week 2 TNF game will allow his touch count to go up in Week 3.
Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles
On Thursday, Miles Sanders was a new addition to the Eagles’ injury report as he was listed as a limited participant with a chest injury. There’s no cause for concern just yet, but it should be monitored.
Trey Sermon, San Francisco 49ers
After suffering a concussion in Week 2 on the first carry of his career, Trey Sermon practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Elijah Mitchell, San Francisco 49ers
Unlike Sermon, Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) didn’t practice Thursday. Mitchell had an active but quiet Week 2, recording 42 yards on 17 carries. He is still listed as questionable for their game against the Green Bay Packers.
JaMycal Hasty, San Francisco 49ers
JaMycal Hasty suffered a high ankle sprain Sunday against the Eagles. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said it will keep him “out for a while,” Nick Wagoner of ESPN reported. He has been ruled out for Week 3.
Rashaad Penny, Seattle Seahawks
Rashaad Penny aggravated a calf injury against Indianapolis in Week 1. On Wednesday, head coach Pete Carroll said that Penny isn’t expected to play Sunday at Minnesota, Brady Henderson of ESPN reports.
A former first-round pick (No. 27 overall) in 2018, Penny has struggled with injuries. He missed two games in his rookie season (knee), six games in 2019 (hamstring and torn ACL), and 13 games in 2020 (ACL recovery).
Outside of Chris Carson, no other Seahawks’ RBs should be rostered in fantasy football.
