The Denver Broncos at Minnesota Vikings was one of 10 games Saturday -- here is the final score, results, and game highlights.

Week 1 of the NFL preseason is here, and we have an action-packed 10-game slate on Saturday, August 14. It was the first time the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings stepped on the field this preseason. While Kirk Cousins has the QB1 job on lock in Minnesota, Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater fought for the role in Denver. Here is the final score, results, and highlights for the Broncos vs. Vikings preseason tilt.

    Broncos 9 17 7 0 33
    Vikings 3 3 0 0 6

The Broncos vs. Vikings game was a complete smackdown by Denver. With Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater both competing for QB1, they both came out trying to impress. Lock clearly won when compared to Bridgewater, with the caveat that Lock played with the starters for all of his reps.

Lock finished the game 5/7 for 151 and 2 touchdowns. His performance was highlighted by a beautiful 80-yard TD pass to K.J. Hamler. When Bridgewater was given his turn, he took full advantage going 7/8 for 74 yards and 1 TD. Although his passes were a little less risky, he did what he does best and managed the game.

For Minnesota, there weren’t many positives to take away from their performance. Rookie QB Kellen Mond played for nearly half the game, and although he showed flashes, his overall performance was nothing to be all that excited about. Running back A.J. Rose Jr. did prove that the Vikings have even more depth at the position than we thought. Even though he will likely be behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison on the depth chart, his performance was solid enough for him to earn a roster spot.

Broncos and Vikings highlights and updates

6:55 PM ET: Rose takes advantage of more reps to surpass the 100-yard mark on 25 attempts.

6:08 PM ET: Rookie safety Caden Sterns makes an incredible play in the end zone to knock the ball out of the hands of Whop Philyor.

6:00 PM ET: Mond continues to show off his versatility by scrambling for a 10-yard gain. Rose has also performed well out of the backfield so far, rushing for 83 yards on 16 attempts.

5:52 PM ET: Bridgewater capitalizes on great field position to throw a four-yard TOUCHDOWN pass to Benson. The rookie wide receiver from East Central University now has 2 TD catches in this game.

5:46 PM ET: Things don’t get any better for the Vikings in the second half as the Broncos return the opening kickoff 62 yards.

5:30 PM ET: Mond completes his first pass of the preseason to RB A.J. Rose for 18 yards. Inside the final two minutes of the half, he then finds Brandon Dillon across the middle to get the Vikings inside the red zone. Mond then carries the ball inside the 10 for a new set of downs. He cannot find the end zone and Joseph adds a field goal to end the half at 26-6.

5:20 PM ET: Bridgewater escapes a sack, and weaves into the end zone. However, the play is negated by a penalty against Cameron Fleming. Vikings rookie LB Chazz Surratt makes 2 tackles to prevent the Broncos from getting inside the 10-yard line. The Broncos convert the field goal to make it 26-3.

5:15 PM ET: On a play-action rollout, Bridgewater hits TE Eric Saubert on a short pass that Saubert takes for a 22-yard gain. He adds a further 11 yards on a pass to WR Benson. The Broncos are now back inside the red zone.

5:10 PM ET: Former Vikings QB, Teddy Bridgewater is now in the game. Lock finishes 5/7 with 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. He simply could not have asked for a much better start to the 2021 NFL preseason.

5:05 PM ET: Kellen Mond is in the game for the Vikings. Browning leaves with a line of 5/10 for 31 yards with an interception. Another penalty on the Vikings, this time holding on Brandon Dillon. This has been a sloppy first half so far from the Vikings. Mond’s first pass is incomplete at the feet of TE Davidson.

5:00 PM ET: A sack opens the latest Vikings drive. Andre Mintze gets to Browning for a five-yard sack. INTERCEPTION by Patrick Surtain II and he walks in for another Broncos’ TOUCHDOWN. 23-3.

4:55 PM ET: The second quarter starts with Lock finding a wide-open Jeudy, who takes the ball for a 33-yard gain. Then Freeman carries the ball down to the four-yard line. This Broncos offense has looked impressive so far today. Lock completes the drive with a rollout TOUCHDOWN pass to Trinity Benson. 16-3

4:45 PM ET: Lock remains on the field for a third drive. Entering this drive he is 3-for-4 for 114 yards and a touchdown. Lock then extends the drive by drawing Stephen Weatherly offside. He then narrowly misses a completion to Jeudy deep down the left side. End of the first quarter, 9-3.

4:40 PM ET: Browning looked like he had Brandon Dillon open down the field, but a pass interference prevents the completion. Rose then goes back to work. This has been a workman-like drive from the Vikings. Browning has a pass dropped in the end zone by Zach Davidson. That leads to a three and out, bringing out Greg Joseph who scores a field goal.

4:35 PM ET: The Vikings finally get a first down thanks to RB A.J. Rose. Any momentum being gained is stalled by a false start for Dozier, who is having a tough start to this game. However, Rose continues to impress with 23 yards on the ground so far on this drive.

4:30 PM ET: Lock goes DEEP to Hamler for an 80-yard TOUCHDOWN. Cameron Dantzler blew the coverage and Lock hit him in stride for the score.

4:25 PM ET: Browning completes his first pass for just two yards. However, on third down, Dakota Dozier commits a holding penalty in the end zone for a SAFETY to open the scoring.

4:20 PM ET: It looked like Williams was in the end zone, but a holding penalty on Jerry Jeudy denies him. The Broncos are faced with a fourth-down and they decide to go for it. After a timeout, Lock has a pass to Jeudy broken up by CB Kris Boyd to end the drive. The Broncos went 67 yards on 8 plays but could not find the end zone.

4:13 PM ET: Denver’s offense is clicking nicely. Lock completes his first pass to K.J. Hamler for 25 yards and the Broncos are in the red zone already.

4:12 PM ET: Lock is the starter for the Broncos and they begin with an 11-yard carry from RB Javonte Williams. He then adds another 13 yards on his next carry, making for an impressive start.

4:10 PM ET: Jake Browning takes the field as the starting QB for the Vikings. Kirk Cousins is one of a number of Vikings players not taking the field today. The second play from scrimmage sees Browning have a ball batted in the air and nearly intercepted. Their first drive goes for a quick three and out, with only a four-yard run from Ameer Abdullah gaining positive yards.
