Jaguars’ strength of schedule and win/loss prediction

According to Vegas projected win totals, the Jacksonville Jaguars have the eighth easiest schedule in 2021. With a projected win total of 6.5, which is tied for third-lowest, Vegas clearly believes the Jaguars are in for another tough season in 2021.

    Toughest opponents

The Jaguars’ 2021 schedule will see them play a total of five games against teams projected to win 10 or more games in 2021. Two of those games come within their division against the Indianapolis Colts. Both games against the Colts will be tough, but with Carson Wentz an unknown under center, the Jaguars could have an opportunity to upset the 2020 playoff team.

The schedule features three games against teams projected to win 10.5 games in 2021. The Jaguars will host the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers while having to go on the road against the Los Angeles Rams. All three teams bring a different challenge for the Jaguars.

Being on the road and facing a Rams team that is tough on both sides of the ball will be a challenge. The 49ers bring a hard-nosed style offense and an extremely threatening defensive line.

Nevertheless, the game against the Bills is arguably the toughest of the three. The Bills’ offense is superb, but their defense is also strong. Buffalo won 13 games in 2020 and had a points differential of 126, the second-best in the AFC.

    Easiest opponents

The Jaguars play four games on their 2021 schedule against opponents who are projected to win 6.5 games or fewer. Two of those games come against the Houston Texans, who are projected for just 4.5 wins. With the Texans’ quarterback situation is currently up in the air, it is tough to know exactly how they will fare in 2021.

The other two games come against the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets, who are both projected to win 6.5 games. The Bengals won just four games in 2020 and struggled after the loss of Joe Burrow. With Burrow on the field, the Bengals scored over 20 points in six of 10 games. In the remaining six games, they achieved that just twice.

Meanwhile, the Jets are in an intriguing situation in 2021. They have a new coaching staff, headed up by Robert Saleh, with a new franchise QB in Zach Wilson. Therefore, the Jets are somewhat of an unknown in terms of their “on-field product” this season.

    2021 season prediction

The Jaguars having the eighth easiest schedule in 2021 is somewhat misleading. They face a number of tough-to-beat teams in 2021. Furthermore, they will be working with a new coaching staff and a quarterback in Trevor Lawrence. The projected 6.5 wins feel like a ceiling. The Jaguars are unlikely to win just one game again, but it is tough to see them getting above six or seven wins in 2021.

    Projected 2021 record: 6-11
