The 49ers are coming off of potentially their most impressive win in a very long time against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. San Francisco walked away with a 35-7 victory, but they were winning so decisively that they ended up pulling their already third-string QB with over eight minutes left to go in the game.
Brock Purdy was stellar for the 49ers in his first NFL start, and he did not shy away from the challenge of going up against Brady. Purdy finished the game with a 76% completion rate, 8.81 yards per attempt, and three total touchdowns.
Despite losing Jimmy Garoppolo just two weeks ago, which made it seem as though the 49ers’ season may be over, Purdy did a masterful job in executing the offense and getting the ball to his playmakers.
The key storyline for San Francisco going into this divisional matchup will be the health of Purdy. The rookie QB injured his oblique early on in the game last week, but still managed to fight through it and emerge victorious.
However, the 49ers now need Purdy to be at full strength on a short week as they head to Seattle. If he’s not at full strength for this matchup, San Francisco could potentially be down to their fourth-string QB on the season, which would be a significant advantage for the Seahawks.

As far as Seattle’s side of the ball, they’re coming off of a tough loss in Week 14 to the Carolina Panthers. The Seahawks had a chance to stay close to the 49ers in the race for the division lead, but they weren’t able to close the game out and they fell 30-24 to Sam Darnold and the Panthers.
Seattle now sits at 7-6 on the season and absolutely need a win this week to stay in the playoff discussion. The issue is that Seattle is banged up in the backfield already, and they now take on a stout 49ers defense.
San Francisco continues to suffocate opposing running games this season, as they’ve allowed just 75.1 rushing yards per contest. With Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas both banged up, the Seahawks might not be able to get much going on the ground at all, which will force the offense to become one-dimensional.
The key for Seattle to win this game though rests on the defense. The Seahawks just allowed the Panthers to run for 223 total yards. That cannot happen this week against Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers’ RB room. If Seattle wants to stay in the playoff race in the NFC, they’ll have to win that battle.
