The matchup between the 49ers and Chargers was pretty much exactly what we expected. There were over 20 penalties, including multiple false starts. The teams combined for 4 turnovers, and both defenses lived in the opponent’s backfield.

However, there was a bright spot for each team. 49ers rookie QB Trey Lance once again impressed, finishing the night 8/14 for 102 yards and a touchdown. He was mobile in and outside of the pocket, showed off what he can do with his legs, and made some throws downfield that had fans very excited for his future.

The Chargers also saw some impressive things out of Easton Stick, who is fighting for the backup job behind Justin Herbert. He finished the night 10/14 for 85 yards and a TD. His competition, Chase Daniel, was less than impressive.

Both team’s defensive lines — whether the starters or backups — put on a show. There was a combined 6 sacks between the two teams.

10:00 PM ET: Daniel’s pass is INTERCEPTED by Jared Mayden. He brought it back to the end zone for a pick 6. Unfortunately, there was a holding penalty on the 49ers, so instead of a touchdown, San Francisco gets the ball at about the 50-yard line.

9:36 PM ET: Lance is starting to find his groove a bit more. He is starting to use his legs and is now 6/12 for 75 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception. The 49ers are marching and are already in field goal range.

They elect to kick the extra point instead, but Robbie Gould misses it. The Chargers lead 10-8 heading into halftime.

8:55 PM ET: Stick was forced out of the pocket by the 49ers pass rush. He tried to get rid of the ball but was flagged for an intentional grounding penalty. Michael Badgley proceeds to kick a 50-yard FIELD GOAL for the Chargers.

7:37 PM ET: Before kickoff, it was announced that Jimmy Garoppolo would play about a quarter and a half as the starting QB for the 49ers. We will then see Trey Lance. Easton Stick is going to be the starter for the Chargers, with Chase Daniel taking over in the second half.
