    San Francisco 49ers News, March 9: Colton McKivitz Extension, Potential Trade for Mac Jones, and More

    Despite their loss in Super Bowl 58, the San Francisco 49ers are in great shape heading into the NFL’s new league year — especially after the league announced the awarded compensatory picks for the 2024 NFL Draft.

    Mac Jones Trade Rumors: Potential Landing Spots Include Vikings, Broncos, 49ers

    Although 49ers’ starting quarterback Brock Purdy played well in his first full season as a starter in San Francisco, another move at the position can never be ruled out. The New England Patriots are reportedly open to trading quarterback Mac Jones this offseason.

    Back in the 2021 NFL Draft, many believed that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was initially targeting Jones with the third overall pick. San Francisco ultimately decided to select Trey Lance instead and could look to bring Jones in via trade now that he’s available.

    49ers Awarded With League-High 5 Compensatory Picks for 2024 NFL Draft

    As San Francisco continues to churn out head coaching and general manager candidates, they are reaping the rewards with more compensatory picks. The NFL announced their awarded compensatory picks for the 2024 NFL Draft on Friday, as the 49ers received a league-high five compensatory picks.

    Given the depth of talent in the 2024 NFL Draft, the 49ers will gladly accept all of the additional draft picks that they can acquire. San Francisco is now loaded with draft capital that they can use in a variety of ways to add talent this offseason.

    Full List of San Francisco 49ers 2024 Draft Picks: How Many Picks Do the 49ers Have?

    While San Francisco officially received five compensatory picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, they will only keep four of them. Their compensatory third-round pick will head to the Washington Commanders due to their midseason trade for edge rusher Chase Young.

    The 49ers will have 11 total draft picks to work with in this year’s event. Including eight picks on the third and final day of the 2024 NFL Draft. Look for San Francisco to use their draft picks to their advantage as they maneuver up and down the board.

    Ciardello has the 49ers trading up with a rival team in the NFC to address one of their biggest needs. We’re beginning to see more trades in the first round of the NFL Draft every year and it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see San Francisco make a move this year.

    49ers Sign OT Colton McKivitz to a Contract Extension

    Despite struggling in his first season as San Francisco’s starting right tackle, the 49ers have signed Colton McKivitz to a one-year, $7 million extension. McKivitz allowed 45 total pressures and six sacks last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

    While some have questioned why the 49ers decided to sign McKivitz to an extension, he continued to improve after a rough start to the regular season. He allowed three sacks in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers but the just three sacks for the remainder of the entire season. McKivitz is worth taking another chance on for a total of $7 million.
