With Dallas Cowboys training camp kicking off in less than a week, some questions are still looming. Although the Cowboys had an incredibly productive NFL offseason, they could add a few things to their to-do list ahead of the season to continue pushing forward.
3 Final Moves for the Dallas Cowboys
Get Some Contract Extensions Done
With Zack Martin being the center of contract talks this week, the Cowboys’ must-do list keeps growing regarding contracts.
Although Martin is the only Dallas player considering holding out from camp, other players are still coming up on their contract year that has been the center of contract talks all offseason.
The Cowboys’ front office will need to figure things out with Dak Prescott, Trevon Diggs, Terence Steele, Tyler Biadasz, and CeeDee Lamb soon.
Some guys might be sooner rather than later, considering Diggs, Steele, and Biadasz are entering the final year of their deals. Unless they come to agreements before the season, they will be in their “prove it” season.
Although Prescott has two years left on his current contract, restructuring could create some cap relief to pave the way for other deals to happen with the guys mentioned above.
Obviously, it would be difficult for the front office to get all of these guys extended by the start of the season. But making some moves on this would be ideal ahead of the 2023 season.
Fortify a Kicker, Not Just for This Season
The Cowboys’ kicker saga is nothing new. Here is a list of Dallas’ kickers from recent history:
- 2022: Brett Maher
- 2020-2021: Greg Zuerlein
- 2018-2019: Brett Maher
- 2011-2017: Dan Bailey
- 2009-2010: David Buehler
Although kickers usually have a lifespan of one or two seasons with the Cowboys, it’s time to find another guy who can stay with the franchise for an extended amount of time.
As the Cowboys head to Oxnard, Calif., for camp, the training camp battle amongst Dallas kickers is between Tristan Vizcaino and Brandon Aubrey.
Both guys fit the mold to be the team’s next clutch guy for this season and future seasons. Their skill sets and young age make them candidates to be the future franchise kicker under Cowboys’ special teams coordinator John Fassel.
Dallas Needs To Decide on a TE1 and Stick With It
With Dallas’ tight end room being so young, this will be a group to watch during camp. This gives the Cowboys a fun challenge to find Prescott’s future “go-to” guy.
With Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, Sean McKeon, Luke Schoonmaker, Seth Green, and Princeton Fant in the Cowboys’ TE room, there is plenty of opportunity to find the team’s next clutch guy for Prescott.
All eyes are on Ferguson, Hendershot, and Schoonmaker heading into camp. One of them could very well become “that guy” and step into that one role in Dalton Schultz’s absence.
With the Cowboys adopting the West Coast offense, the tight end room must be at the top of their game. Speed and accuracy will be critical in finding who will be the starter. The TE room is versatile and can help Mike McCarthy’s play-calling become less unpredictable for opposing defenses.
