2-Time Super Time Champion Rips NFC Team, Calling Them a ‘Disaster’ He Wouldn’t Want To Play For

Matthew Stafford could be on the move this offseason, but ESPN's Damien Woody cautioned the 16-year vet from the "Disaster" that is the Giants.

Being labeled a “Disaster” is a tough pill to swallow for any NFL team but the New York Giants fall into that category after an atrocious 2024 season. They finished 3-14 and released starting quarterback Daniel Jones mid-way through the year.

The Giants have been linked to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford this offseason with head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen publicly acting like they’re in “win now” mode. ESPN NFL Analyst Damien Woody recently appeared on “Get Up” and cautioned the veteran quarterback about the situation he’d be walking into.

Damien Woody Tells Stafford To Stay Away From the ‘Disaster’ New York Giants

The Rams permitted Stafford to speak with other teams and potentially find a trade partner before Super Bowl 59, and many teams have already publicly expressed interest. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently broke down which teams have shown early interest, and what they might have to give in return for Stafford.

After being traded from the Detroit Lions, the veteran quarterback won Super Bowl 56 in his first season with the Rams. 2021 was arguably Stafford’s best season throwing for 4,886 yards and 41 touchdowns. He was limited to nine games the following year with a scary spinal cord contusion and his production has dipped each of the last two seasons.

2024 was his worst statistical season where he played 15 or more games throwing for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He wants to continue playing, but unfortunately for Stafford, Breer reported that many bad teams are interested in the quarterback.

Breer listed the Giants among the teams, and Woody, a two-time Super Bowl Champion, strongly feels Stafford should avoid New York at all costs.

“Get Up” host Mike Greenberg said, “Matt Stafford can’t seriously want to go to the Giants,” to which Woody laughed and responded, “No way I would want to play for the New York Football Giants. The New York Football Giants are a disaster.

“We’ve seen what happened this past year with Saquon Barkley, him going on to win the Super Bowl. The disaster that was Daniel Jones. They can’t protect the quarterback, and oh by the way the front office and coach are barely hanging on as it is.”

Schoen inherited both Barkley and Jones but his decision to sign the quarterback to a four-year, $160 million extension in 2023 meant Barkley’s time in New York was limited. The running back signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason and nearly broke the all-time rushing record posting 2,005 yards behind the elite Philadelphia offensive line.

Jones was cut before Thanksgiving and finished the season as Sam Darnold’s backup for the Minnesota Vikings.

Woody continued, “If you’re Matt Stafford playing outdoors in the NFC East with all that type of inclement weather. What happens if things don’t roll your way? That whole regime could be out, then you could be in a situation where you got a whole new regime coming in. I don’t want any part of that instability if I’m Matthew Stafford.”

Stafford is due just under $50 million in 2025 and Breer expects whatever team he lands with to give him a $5 million raise. The 16-year vet can still play leading the Rams to an NFC West Title and pushing the Eagles to the limit in the Divisional Round, but that’s a lot of money for a short-term quarterback. He shouldn’t want to play for a bad team but that might be his only option.
